Inside the Design of Fancy Pork

Step 2: First Pass at the Site Layoutprevious | next

As shown in this picture, I did some additional work on the logo -- one might go so far as to suggest that I was smoking crack and took what started out as a very cool rough cut and made it total shit (I certainly think so whenever I see this particular iteration). I did, however, choose the font on this pass -- a decision I continue to be especially pleased with. I decided on an early 70's computer-style font that capitalizes on what I like to think of as the "corporate chemical giant/patron of the arts/planet killer" theme. Of course, this is also the font that pervades countless futuristic movies from the 70's, most notably the fantastic Andromeda Strain, and the tragic and unitentionally funny James Caan vehicle Rollerball. Both of these films are worth watching, albeit for very different reasons. Watch roller ball if for no other reason than to see the Fancy Pork Products logo on every possible surface... you know it's the future because everything is round and made of lucite. :)

Anyhoo, getting back on track... you can also see how the original logo suggested the basic color scheme for the site: lots of red and blue with a white content area and some funky optics on the right border of the page, rounded corners and a vaguely "clipboard" feel to the whole thing (when I was designing this I actually pictured a chemical engineer in white lab coat carrying a clipboard). I was quite fond of this initial pass, but I didn't care much for the color scheme. I didn't want black text on a white background, so I took some time to experiment with other color combinations.
